Folks, everyone is invited to Veteran Appreciation Day at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 2nd, 2008.
Please come check out the booths of local businesses and organizations, and let our vets know that whoever you are, wherever
you're from, whatever philosophy you subscribe to... you appreciate their service and sacrifices for this great country we
all share! The US can't have enough veteran-supporting communities! Let's make Cherokee a great one! The CCCB will have a
table with lots of hand-outs, information about county parks and hunting, birdwatching and roadside wildflowers! You can also
bring someone out to browse our website right there at the table. Don't miss it!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Thanks for clicking your way here, reader. We have some catching up to do!
From April through June, Silver Sioux Campground was a mudhole, I admit. There is very little we can do about this problem,
as the main camping area was built in a place where groundwater seeps up during wet years. I know, you think I should tile
it and make it a drier place, but this may not be a viable solution so I beg your patience as we await next spring and pray
for a teeny weeny drought.
Now, however, in the beautiful, hot weather of an Iowa July, lush with greenery and flowers and birds and mosquitoes
(more on these later), the campground is dry! The electrical service has been improved and repaired, there is a water hook-up
for every pull-through campsite, grass is thick in the camping areas and WE ARE FOGGING FOR MOSQUITOES WEEKLY. I am not an
insecticide kind of a gal, but this is a sacrifice I made for YOU, my camping friends. I hope it will make your time in the
outdoors more relaxing, and also prevent life-threatening diseases spread by mosquitoes.
We also started the season with a campground host, which really saves us time during our weekend rounds. Unfortunately,
Ron's health hasn't been cooperating and he regretfully pulled out on Sunday to take the time to care for himself. I'm pretty
sure he was kicking and screaming most of the way home because he loves that campground and the responsibilities he undertook
for us this summer. We will miss his assistance, and campers will have to self-register just like they did before. Please
drop your registration envelope and payment in the box within 1/2 hour of arrival. We have five campgrounds to visit each
night, so help make our job easier and the graying and receding of hair on our young heads will slow down!
If you really want to treat your family and friends, reserve the Silver Sioux Lodge for your next visit! Check out the
details on our
Lodge page, or stop in for a peek.
Also, we have six canoes and two kayaks available for rent. Learn more about it on our
paddling page! As of this date, the river is ideal for floating (it has gone down considerably). We have had a complaint about trees in
the river immediately downstream from the sandbar at Barnes Access. This is not a problem we can alleviate immediately, so
I recommend either putting in at Martin's Access or carrying your canoe/kayak along the trail at Barnes to the sandbar above
the rock riffle. Wear your life jacket! Swimming isn't always an option in the current.
Mostly, I just want to say, enjoy our Cherokee County outdoors! I hope to see you out there...
